On Sunday 7th December at 9.45am, St Mary Magdalene Church, Geddington will hold a Holy Communion with a Commemoration for Queen Eleanor of Castile.

History tells us that Queen Eleanor and her husband, King Edward I, stayed many times at their royal palace in Geddington and worshipped in the church. On 28th November 1290, while travelling to join the King in Scotland, Queen Eleanor became gravely ill and died at Harby.

Heartbroken by her death, the King ordered that a cross be erected at every place where her bier rested on its journey south. Twelve crosses were created in total, but only three survive today – and the best preserved of them stands at the heart of Geddington.
