Part One: The Call to War (1914)
Over the coming days, we’ll share the stories of those from Geddington who served and died in the Great War – their courage, their sacrifice, and their enduring memory.
In August 1914, Britain declared war on Germany after the invasion of Belgium. The announcement reached even the quiet lanes of Geddington.
Young men from the village responded with a mix of excitement and duty – signing up to join their pals, convinced the fighting would be over by Christmas. They left farms, workshops, and family homes behind to serve their King and country.
Among the first to go were Harry Higgs, who fell in November 1914, and St John Allen, a Lance Corporal who died a month later. By early 1915, Arthur Berridge and George Miller had also been lost, both killed in the first terrible year of the war.
None of them could have known how long the struggle would last, or how profoundly it would change the world they left behind.
