Congratulations in order for Mutz Nutz at the Star Charity Quiz

Remember this date: Tuesday 29th July, the day when The Star Charity Quiz became competitive! You would have thought that the treasured cup was the fabled Ark of the Covenant or part of the Elgin Marbles Collection – but no. Even though I had stressed that it was “only for fun” and to “be generous with the marking,” some teams were out to win.

Wrong answers were queried, and when there were three choices, teams wailed that it was too easy. You know who you are. All I can say is that the next quiz, on Tuesday 12th August, I will be strict and focused. I may even use a taser for control (Gordon has one in his garage, very useful).

Maybe there will be no repeats, and I may speak in a foreign language. In my defence, I was distracted by The Burger Van in the car park coming through to the bar and ordering drinks. Always welcome, but distracting.

I jokingly gave The Topical Team half a point for helping me look up a disputed question (I was correct, by the way). Mutz Nutz shouted that it wasn’t fair. The 1st equal spot was Mutz Nutz with 88 and The Topical Team with 88 and the half point. I decided that, in the spirit of fairness, peace, and womanhood, it was a draw. More wailing and shrieks – the spirit of fairness, peace, and womanhood was absent.

The tiebreaker was: “What was the population of Taiwan in 2024? Write on a piece of paper and hand it in within three minutes.” The Topical Team guessed 10 million and Mutz Nutz guessed 20 million. The answer was 23 million, so Mutz Nutz won.

2nd was The Topical Team with 88.
3rd was Loose Women with 87.
4th was NFN with 86.
5th were three teams: Queen St Runners, Geddington Goers, and Stoity Twange with 85.
8th was Old Rockers with 83.
9th was BBJS with 82.

The Jolly Imbibers came last with 46 points – which was good, because they were jolly and they did imbibe! They said they are coming again.

The good news is that we raised £311.90 for hedgehog protection. The next quiz, as I say, is on 12th August and is a wildcard. That means whoever wins gets to choose which charity we have supported this year. I will give you a sheet to remind you of all the charities.

I forgot to say – please book your teams and numbers so that the landlord can decide how on earth they can all fit in!
