Geddington Cricket Club’s advertised Cricket, Cider & Sausage Weekend this July, promises three packed days of food, fun, and friendly competition. From Friday 18th to Sunday 20th July, the club will host a full programme of village favourites – including the return of the ever-popular Street Cricket tournament and the legendary Battle of the Brook.
The weekend kicks off on Friday evening with a BBQ at the ground, followed on Saturday by the club’s Premier League T20 Finals and a silent disco in the evening. But it’s Sunday’s Community Fun Day that will be the highlight for many.
From 9am on Sunday 20th July, the park will come alive with Street Cricket, as teams representing different parts of the village take part in a friendly but fiercely contested cricket competition. It’s a brilliant spectacle, open to players of all abilities – no equipment needed, just six players and plenty of energy. The fun continues throughout the day with children’s activities, village stalls, a DJ, and of course, a hearty supply of refreshments thanks to the BBQ, cider bar and Pimm’s tent, all staffed by volunteers.
Then, at around 4pm, we will witness the return of the Battle of the Brook – the historic tug-of-war challenge between the North and South sides of the River Ise. According to the ancient Geddington Charter, ten strong villagers from each side are chosen to settle the score in a best-of-three pull. Last year’s victors, the South, will be defending their title with pride, but the North are sure to return hungry for revenge.
The entire weekend is open to all, with Sunday’s festivities free to attend. Whether you’re competing, cheering from the sidelines, or just enjoying a burger and cider in the sun, it’s shaping up to be a perfect celebration of village life.
