A Day at The first Rutland Flower Show

The weather was hot, the coach was booked and 30 WI ladies and friends set off from Geddington to visit the showground in Oakham where Gates Garden Centre had set up the first Rutland Flower Show.

What a success it was!  The organisation of the site was excellent; the plant stalls were fully packed and the show gardens were imaginative and beautiful.  Add to that the display tents for organisations and produce and the marquee housing the amazing and talented displays from the flower arrangers and you had an event which had something for everyone.

There were plenty of food stalls, ice cream sellers and fairground rides too and perhaps the highlight for some, a triple flypast by a Spitfire over the showground.

The ladies came home with plants for their gardens, treats to eat with their afternoon cuppa, craft items, dare i say it – early Christmas presents too – and several wicker dragonflies; not to mention memories of a good day out!

Geddington and Newton WI meets every second Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. Meetings start at 7:30pm and all are welcome.
