Four Morris dancing groups brought colour, music, and tradition to the Eleanor Cross last night, entertaining a large crowd with lively performances, friendly camaraderie, and a chance for everyone to join in.
Last night, the Eleanor Cross played host to an evening of traditional music, colour, and community spirit as four Morris dancing groups came together for a lively display. Braybrooke Morris, Northampton Morris, Corby Conspiracy, and Cobbled Together brought their unique styles – and more than 20 dancers in total – to the historic heart of Geddington.
Locals and visitors gathered around the Cross, many settling in with a drink from The Star Inn, while others perched on the ancient steps to enjoy the show. The evening began while there was still light enough to admire the costumes – bright sashes, jingling bells, and the occasional eccentric hat – and continued until it was too dark to dance!
Each group danced to live music, with recorders, accordions, and drums providing the soundtrack to the evening. Cobbled Together performed their version of the Sword Dance, a routine fondly remembered by Geddington School pupils on May Day. Northampton Morris treated the crowd to a dance set to the tune of Over the Hills and Far Away, familiar to many as the theme from the Sharpe TV series.
There was also a wonderful display of camaraderie between groups: when Corby Conspiracy found themselves one dancer short, a member of Braybrooke Morris stepped in to keep the formation intact. The friendly spirit was evident all evening, both among the dancers and in the appreciative crowd.
As the night drew to a close, the performers extended an invitation to the public to join in. With patient guidance from experienced dancers – including one from Braybrooke Morris leading the way – the gathered onlookers took to the ‘floor’ for a mass dance.
It was a night that showcased not only the variety of Morris dancing styles, but also the warmth of the folk community – and the charm of seeing a centuries-old tradition brought to life in the heart of the village.

It was a pleasure to dance for everyone with Braybrooke Morris and our friends from other local Morris sides – it’s always one of our favourite dancing out locations with a very enthusiastic audience! We look forward to next year.
