The project, commissioned by English Heritage, preserves the monument’s historical and cultural significance for the community.
Maintenance work has begun on the Eleanor Cross by the UK’s oldest building contractors. Established in 1759, Sykes & Son Limited has evolved from a small specialist contractor – a glazier, plumber, decorator and small builder – into a medium sized, multi-discipline contractor with an annual turnover of over £35m.
An expert from Sykes repointing the steps of the Eleanor Cross. [Photo: Geddington.net]The work consists of removing the existing mortar from the steps, to a depth of about 2cm, and then repointing with a lime mortar mix. It began yesterday and is expected to be completed today (19th July).

Its good to see regular maintenance work is being done. Is the stone itself also protected from weathering somehow, particularly the more delicate features such as the intricate patterns and statues of Eleanor?
