Personal Information

Roland’s parents were  John Thomas & Ellen Patrick. He was born in Geddington and baptised there on 26th August 1894, the youngest of their 3 sons to serve during the war and the first to lose his life. Like the majority of the family he took an active part in church and village life and was recorded as the winner of the half mile handicap at the Coronation Sports in 1911.

He joined the army in 1914 and went out to France the following August. He was wounded in the leg on Hill 70 at the Battle of Loos and was sent to Whitchurch Hosptal in Cardiff for treatment. He returned to France in December 1915.

Roland has no known grave and is remembered on the memorial near Pas de Calais with over 20,000 other men.
