Geddington University

What is Geddington University?

Geddington University is an exciting new project which will be run at Geddington C of E school from 3.15 until 5pm each weekday. The idea is to extend the school day and allow children to participate in subjects that support the current curriculum but are delivered by a range of talented volunteers and specialist professionals in intensive practical sessions. The University is funded by the Race To The Top project which aims to improve young people’s aspirations.

What kind of activities will be available?

The University will be split into two sections:

3.15-4.15 pm: Dedicated sports activities ranging from Premier Sports clubs, Netball and Taekwondo followed by a healthy snack, or the option to participate in dedicated Homework support club with the help from our older children volunteers from local secondary schools.

4.15-5pm: Working with local businesses and community partners to run specialist projects with the children, this could be a first aid course, cookery classes, managing money skills and much more…

The projects will fit into 5 key themes:

How can I be involved in Geddington University?

We are hoping to work with a wide range of volunteers and businesses throughout the community, so if you have an idea then please do get in touch. We would love to hear from you if you work for a company who you think might want to run a project with the children or indeed you have a skill that you would like to share with the children. We hope to engage our children in lots of exciting projects.

How long will Geddington University run for?

The Race To The Top funding is for one year- however if the project is a success we hope to continue this in the coming years. This will be a term time after school activity which will hopefully be ready to open at the end of September.

Which children can attend the University?

The University will be suitable for all KS2 children attending Geddington C of E School. The children will be given an application form which will need to be completed and returned to the school for selection. We are going to ask the children to complete a short paragraph around why they would like to attend Geddington University or for younger children they may wish to draw a picture.

How can you help?

  • Do you have secondary school children who would be willing to volunteer an hour of their time a week to support our children with their homework- we are hoping to be able to offer a Homework club every evening after school from 3.15-4pm.
  • Do you have children who are currently doing their Duke of Edinburgh awards – do they need a placement to carry out their volunteering?
  • Do you work for a company who enjoys working with the local community- Is there a project that we could run that would link with the 5 key areas? (IT, STEM, Communication and Media Studies, Physical Education and Well Being or Arts and Humanities)
  • Are you an expert or have a specialist skill – would you be willing to offer some of your time to be involved in a project?
